Essential Oils under attack

Dear Friend,

Here we go again. This time the Canadian government is trying to take away your access to essential oils.

It appears that the manufacturers of the insect repellent DEET do not like competition. The essential oil citronella which has been commonly used to prevent insect bites has become very popular in the last few years. The public has learned few things about DEET; for example, that DEET was originally patented in 1957 for public use as an insecticide. Most people I know would prefer not to spray themselves with chemical poison to avoid getting bitten by mosquitos.

Citronella was approved in the US and Canada in the 1940's for use to prevent insect bites. To my knowledge there is no known toxicity. On the other hand DEET has many known toxic side effects, primarily neurologic and children are at highest risk. Here they are:

Cardiovascular -hypotension -bradycardia

Dermatologic -erythema -bullous eruptions -contact uticaria -anaphylaxis

Nervous System -ataxia -confusion -slurred speech -muscle cramping -insomnia -tremor -clonic jerking psychosi -seizures -coma (list from

http://www.ruralfamilymedicine.org/tick%20lecture/sld004.htm)

Fatalities from ingestion and chronic dermal application of DEET containing products are rare, but have been described.

So now your access to citronella is threatened.
