Bill C-6 specifically EXEMPTS products listed in Schedule 1, which
includes both “drugs” and “foods”. “Natural Health Products” are not
specifically mentioned in Schedule 1. NHPs are treated for regulatory
purposes as a sub-category of “drugs”; however, one wonders if their
omission from Schedule 1 may be a deliberate semantic loophole.
Bill C-6 gives powers to inspectors to stop the importation or sale of
a product and to seize property and documents, based entirely on the

The 2nd reading and the vote for Bill C-420 an Act to Amend the Food and Drugs Act was successful at 6:35 p.m. EST (March 9th 2005). The vote was unanimous in carrying it to Health committee. From there it will come back to the house for 3rd and final reading.

For those who don't know, Bill C-420 will put neutraceuticals, supplements and vitamins back into the food category guaranteeing that Canadians will have the right to choose their supplements with good selection and affordable prices. If C-420 doesn't go through we will see most of the selections on store shelves go down to just a few products and most of these will only be available under prescription or in dosages that are ineffective.
